Trimitas in Jazz

DURATION: 1 hour

Benny Goodman’s music is reborn in the arrangements of the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra! The performance features the sounds of an unusual combination of clarinet, vibraphone and wind orchestra. Together with soloists Marius Šinkūnas (vibraphone) and Ąžuols Paulauskas (clarinet), the orchestra will reveal the combination of these sophisticated instruments in a concert programme unparalleled in Lithuania.

Benny Goodman was born in 1909 in Chicago, USA, to parents who were emigrants from Kaunas and Warsaw, the cities of the old continent. The large and musical Goodman family allowed Benny’s talent to flourish freely, and as a child, he already demonstrated an exceptional sense of swing and rhythm. In 1934, he formed his big band in Chicago (with Fletcher Henderson and Benny Carter playing and arranging). From 1935 onwards, he also gave concerts with small ensembles (trio, quartet, sextet) made up of musicians from the big band. In 1938, his orchestra was the first jazz ensemble to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York. Benny Goodman’s orchestra commissioned works of classical composers such as Béla Bartók (Contrasts), and Aaron Copland and Paul Hindemith (Concertos for Clarinet and Orchestra). Elaborate solo improvisations typical to Benny Goodman’s big band have had a major influence on the development of jazz music.
