This concert is dedicated to the work of German-American composer Kurt Weill (1900–1950). His music ranges from theatre and vaudeville, opera, cabaret and operetta, to dance and pantomime. He was also one of the first 20th-century composers to write large-scale opuses for wind orchestra like, Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra (1924), and Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s musical play, The Threepenny Opera (1928), for soloists and wind ensemble. Weill is perhaps best known for his wistful and harsh, hilarious and tragic cabaret songs about the fate of man—full of quotations from popular jazz and dance tunes, taking us back to the early years of the last century. His songs, although rarely heard in Lithuania, were extremely popular, and the Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra, conducted by the charismatic maestro Vytautas Lukočius, will present them in a new way, together with soloists Nora Petročenko and Rafailas Karpis, whose vocal abilities and stage presence are a perfect match for Weill’s musical style and lyrics. The concert will be directed by actress Birutė Mar, a regular partner in the orchestra’s creative projects.
