Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra
The Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra is a versatile collective that performs works of various genres and styles. The orchestra actively performs with renowned soloists and groups: Anders Paulsson, Sergei Nakariakov, Pavel Giunter, Petras Geniušas, Daumantas Kirilauskas, and Vytautas Sondeckis among others. The orchestra participates in various projects, including stage, theatre and modern dance productions. The orchestra pursues new forms and works closely with Lithuanian and foreign composers. It commissions new works, publishes new music, implements educational projects, and delivers workshops.
In 2021, the position of Artistic Director was appointed to Leif Karlsson (Sweden). The Chief Conductor is Karolis Variakojis. The orchestra was established in 1957 by Vitas Žilius. The turning point came in 1964 when Romas Balčiūnas took the position of the principal conductor for more than four decades.
In 2018, Antanas Kučinskas, PhD, was appointed director general of the orchestra. It was previously led by Viktoras Aleksa (1961–1964), Ramutis Balčiūnas (1964–1977), Mindaugas Tamošiūnas (1977–1983), Lionginas Čiapas (1983–1987), Rimantas Pašiūnas (1987–1992), Romualdas Petraitis (April–November 1992), Prof. Algirdas Budrys (1992–2004), Romualdas Barvainis (2004–2013), and Deividas Staponkus (2013–2018).
